Normally when using a VPN on an iOS or iPadOS device, this requires opening the VPN application, selecting your server and waiting for the VPN to connect.
To make this easier, you can utilise the in built Shortcuts app to create a toggle shortcut on your home screen that can turn on and off the VPN at will.
Before starting, make sure you have an active VPN service logged in to your device. For this article I will be using AirVPN which uses the WireGuard client, but you might be using NordVPN or ProtonVPN. The process is the same.
To begin, navigate or search for Shortcuts and open it.
Click the + and create a new Shortcut.
Name your shortcut VPN Toggle, or something to that liking so you can easily identify it in your home screen.
Add a new Action by searching for “VPN” and select “Set VPN”
Tap the “set” option and change it to “toggle”, and in the VPN label, select it and choose your VPN configuration.
Tap the name of the shortcut at the top of the screen and select “Add to Home Screen”
Test your toggle works by tapping it. If it works, you should see the VPN icon in your status bar. Tap it again to turn off VPN.
Done!
